HOW I CAME TO FORM ROGERS THERAPY

Background

It has always been my belief that people naturally desire to be the best that they can be. And it has been my experience that we all struggle from time to time with obstacles that make it difficult to fulfill this desire. From my early days as a teacher to my current work as a private therapist, I am continuously impressed with how the assistance from another skilled helping professional can help us overcome almost any obstacle that keeps us from living fulfilling and joyful lives. Such skilled guidance can help channel our best strengths into truly meaningful change. When this assistance is based on respect, flexibility, and absolute confidentiality, it is powerful.

Teacher

I was an enthusiastic young teacher, well prepared, licensed, and ready to teach! I had a marvelous time working with young people who fully demonstrated a natural desire to learn and do their best. But, I soon found a number of students who struggled with learning disabilities, ADHD, and other social/emotional challenges. To confront the issue, I sought additional training and experience in special education, and discovered that changing my teaching methods helped these students to find academic success. Yet, I still felt as though I wasn’t succeeding to help students with other kinds of issues. No student ever intends to develop a problem with alcohol or other substances, but nevertheless, some do develop such problems. And it was these students – one in particular – that set in motion the next phase of my career.

Masters Level Counselor

Being closely involved with this bright, capable, fun-loving student who fell into despair and experienced an ever-increasing number of failures was in part the catalyst for my completing a master’s degree in counseling and becoming a Certified Substance Abuse Counselor. I moved from the classroom to in-patient and out-patient psychiatric and substance abuse treatment centers working with teens, adults, families, and couples. An eager counselor, I fully embraced client-centered therapy, traditional counseling methods, and 12-step recovery programs. However, regardless of the patients’ age or any other factors, treatment in these settings generally applied a uniform, one-size-fits-all approach.

I was reminded of my early years of teaching where I learned that one-size-fits-all teaching methods failed many students. When our homogeneous counseling methods failed to help a patient, it was most often considered the patient’s fault – they were “unmotivated,” or “in denial.” Or were they? Many repeatedly sought help, and put great effort into trying to utilize the services offered. Again, it was the patients who failed to be the best they could be that set in motion the next phase of my career.

Licensed Psychologist

I entered this phase of my career by earning a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from Columbia University and by participating in post-doctoral studies at New York University. I became a talented and respected provider of interpersonal individual and group psychotherapy. In my work as a private therapist and as a University Staff Psychologist, I came to understand each client as an individual with a unique set of circumstances which contributed to the problems they sought my help in addressing. Always at the foundation of my work was a deep respect for my clients and a commitment to being flexible and providing completely confidential assistance. My background lead other health care providers to refer patients with family issues, depression, anxiety, problematic drug/alcohol use, learning difficulties, and identity concerns to me. I thus began working with more and more clients who wanted to address these issues. And, it has been my work with these clients that led me to form Rogers Therapy, a specialized practice which tailors its services to individual needs.
